What Sabyasachi at NYFW Says About Who Gets to Call It Fashion

Surbhi Chadha

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is showing on the official CFDA schedule at New York Fashion Week this September, on the same calendar as Michael Kors and Tory Burch. He has been to New York before, with a presentation in 2006 and another in 2019. Neither put him on the main runway calendar next to the city's biggest labels. This one does.

A Different Kind of Invitation

Most Indian designers who reached international fashion weeks over the past two decades did so through a separate track.

The pattern usually meant a standalone showcase here, or an India-focused event there, reviewed on its own terms rather than against the week's main competition. That was useful for visibility, but less useful for being taken seriously as fashion rather than heritage on display.

Being on the same calendar as Michael Kors changes the terms of comparison. It puts Sabyasachi in front of the same critics, in the same week, right alongside the American ready-to-wear labels also showing that week. That is a different kind of scrutiny and legitimacy.

The Line Between Heritage and Fashion

Sabyasachi's collections run on hand embroidery and Bengal's textile traditions, the kind of work usually filed under 'ethnic wear' or 'heritage' rather than judged as fashion on equal terms. Whether that filing habit survives a season where hand-worked craft sits next to New York's precision tailoring is the real question this show raises.

That distinction affects the artisans behind the embroidery too. 'Heritage craft' gets photographed and admired. 'Fashion' gets credited, priced and repeated season after season. Which category a collection lands in decides how seriously the work, and the people who made it, get taken.

This is close to the stance TuDuGu keeps taking about Indian craft and recognition. A single seat at the main table does not undo decades of being kept in a separate lane.

It is still worth noticing, precisely because a seat like this is not supposed to come easily.
