Vague Green Claims Become Illegal Across the EU

From 27 September 2026, brands must prove what they say about sustainability

Greenwashing is when a brand makes its products sound kinder to the planet than they really are. The EU's Empowering Consumers Directive tackles this by banning vague or unproven environmental claims across all 27 member states.

What you need to know:

• Words like "eco-friendly" and "green" can no longer be used without clear proof
• Brands cannot invent their own sustainability labels; labels must be certified or backed by a public authority
• A green claim about one part of a product, such as its lining, cannot be used for the whole product
• "Carbon neutral" claims based only on buying offsets are banned
• The rules apply to every business selling to EU shoppers, wherever it is based

The next time a label says "eco", look for the proof behind it. A named maker, a known material and a clear process tell you more than any buzzword.

France Puts a Price on Ultra-Fast Fashion

A new law adds a charge to every ultra-cheap garment sold in France

Ultra-fast fashion describes brands that release thousands of new, very cheap styles every week, made to be worn a few times and thrown away. France's Law No. 2026-602 now makes these brands pay more for the waste they leave behind.

What's changing:

• Since 1 September 2026, ultra-fast fashion brands pay a penalty of €0.25 to €12 on each item
• The penalty rises to between €2 and €20 per item by 2030
• Advertising for ultra-fast fashion will be banned from 1 January 2027
• The charge sits within France's system for collecting and recycling old clothes

A very low price tag rarely tells the full story. Before your next purchase, ask how long the piece will last, and choose fewer, better-made clothes you will wear for years.

California's Clothing Take-Back Law Clears Its First Legal Hurdle

Fashion brands selling in California must now help pay for what happens to old clothes

Extended producer responsibility, or EPR, means the company that makes a product also pays for what happens to it once it is thrown away. California's SB 707 applies this idea to clothing and textiles for the first time in the US.

The key facts:

• SB 707 is the first US law making clothing brands fund the collection, repair, reuse and recycling of their products
• A court has tentatively rejected a legal challenge against it
• Brands with more than $1 million in global sales had to register by 1 July 2026
• Regulators meet again on 29 September 2026 to shape fees and programme details

Brands are being asked to think about a garment's whole life. You can do the same: mend what you own, pass on what you no longer wear, and buy pieces made to be repaired.

Europe's Packaging Rules Now Cover Every Fashion Parcel

Since 12 August 2026, all packaging sent into the EU must meet one set of rules

Packaging is one of the most visible sources of waste in online shopping, from plastic mailers to oversized boxes. The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation sets one common rulebook for how packaging is made, used and recycled.

At a glance:

• The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation applies in all 27 EU countries
• It covers shipping boxes, mailer bags and garment bags, including orders sent from outside Europe
• Packaging must become recyclable, with targets phasing in over the coming years
• Oversized boxes and excess wrapping will face closer checks

What your order arrives in is part of its footprint. Choose sellers who pack simply, and reuse or recycle every box and bag that reaches your door.

Spain Moves Closer to Making Fashion Pay for Its Waste

A draft law cleared its EU review on 28 August 2026 and now awaits adoption

Under extended producer responsibility (EPR), brands fund the collection and recycling of the products they sell, instead of leaving the cost to councils and taxpayers. Spain has drafted its own EPR law for clothing and footwear, following France and the Netherlands.

What it means:

• Brands selling clothes and shoes in Spain will have to register and join a collective recycling scheme
• They will pay for collecting, sorting, reusing and recycling old textiles
• Online sellers and brands based outside Spain are included; small businesses get more time
• Spain is acting on an EU rule that requires every member state to set up a similar system

Every garment you buy will one day need a second life. Pick natural fibres and sturdy craftsmanship, as they are easier to repair, reuse and return to the earth.

China Tightens the Rules on Textile Factory Wastewater

Mills and dye houses face stricter limits on what they release into rivers

Dyeing and finishing fabric uses large amounts of water, and the waste water can carry dyes and chemicals into rivers. China, the world's largest textile producer, has set tougher national limits on how clean that water must be before it is released.

In simple terms:

• A new national standard sets tougher limits on pollution in textile wastewater
• It applies to mills, dye houses and finishing units working with cotton, wool, silk, linen and synthetics
• New or upgraded factories must comply straight away; older ones get time to catch up
• Suppliers may need to invest in cleaner water treatment, which could affect prices

Every colour in your wardrobe once passed through water. When you can, choose naturally dyed textiles and ask brands how their fabrics are coloured.
